Morrison is a highly talented writer and will use writing techniques and story elements from older dc books. So if you're not familiar with the depth of continuity DC has then I'd probably start with Scott Snyder's Batman run. But don't let that scare you from this book, it's amazing to say the least, it just takes a lot of comic knowledge to really appreciate.
