🎀 The Doll That Knows What Month You Were Born

There was a moment in the 1980s when the collectible doll became something more than a toy. It became a gesture. A way of saying: I know what month you came into the world, and I found the thing made specifically for that month, and I put it in your hands as proof that your birthday mattered. The Russ Berrie Months to Remember series was built entirely around that idea. Twelve dolls, twelve months, twelve ways to say: this one is yours. 🎀

This is the August doll. She stands on her white display stand in the pink Victorian dress and lace apron she was made with. The hang tag — "Months to Remember | Porcelain Collectible Dolls | August" — is still pinned to her dress with the original safety pin. She has long golden hair in braids, a pink bonnet, brown boots, and the careful painted face that Russ Berrie put on every piece in this line. She is, forty-something years after she was made, exactly what she was designed to be: a keepsake.

🏭 Russ Berrie & Company — The Oakland, NJ Gift Empire

Russell Berrie started his company in 1963 out of his car. He was a salesman who believed that the right stuffed animal or the right small gift could communicate something that words sometimes couldn't, and he built a company around that conviction. By the time Russ Berrie and Company went public in 1984, it was one of the most recognizable names in the American gift trade. 🧸

The Months to Remember series was one of the company's signature collectible lines. Each doll in the series was made to represent one of the twelve months, dressed in the fashion of a different era, constructed with a porcelain face, hands, and feet on a soft fabric body. Style 1592 — the number on the box of this doll — is the earlier, more elaborate version of the August doll. The pink Victorian dress with its white lace apron overlay, the ruffled collar, the bonnet, the boots. The construction details are more intricate than the later simplified versions. 🎀

🌸 August — The Birth Month

August is the month of peridot and gladiolus. The birthstone is a warm pale green — one of the few gemstones formed not in the earth's crust but in the mantle below, carried up by volcanic activity from miles beneath the surface. Ancient Egyptians called it the "gem of the sun." The birth flower is the gladiolus, named from the Latin for sword — gladius — meaning strength of character, faithfulness, integrity. August also contains both Leo and Virgo: the confidence of summer and the precision of early autumn in equal measure. 🌸

🏡 The 1980s Collectible Moment

The 1980s were the golden decade of the American collectible. The Bradford Exchange. The Franklin Mint. Norman Rockwell figurines. Russ Berrie's Months to Remember dolls were part of this broader cultural moment — sold in gift shops and department stores, displayed in glass-front cases and on piano tops beside family photographs. They became the kind of thing that moved from one generation to the next not because anyone planned it but because they were too particular to discard. This is the August one — someone's August, and August meant something specific to somebody. 🎀

i couldn’t put it down
Format: Kindle
It’s 2 in the morning and I’ve just finished reading this. I haven’t had a book make me stay up late reading in bed since I was in high school. Sure I have books that I can’t put down but the draw to this one was so enticing. Every time I tried to go to sleep or do something else I kept reaching for my kindle wanting more. I loved Josie and her character growth. I’ve felt how she feels, being guarded, feeling like you can’t show your true self, & what if when you are you people don’t like you or understand you. Seeing her let in chaos into her life was a simple reminder we all need that not everything has to be perfect. Ryan or Rj was the picture perfect boyfriend and the ending had me in tears 😭 we all need a good listener in our life who will be there when it matters most. The way he’s painted in Josie’s eyes to the sweetheart he is inside was so nice. Also, the nerdy but cute vibes he gives off. & can I just say reading about a reader who has dyslexia made me so giddy because I work with kids like that. I loved all of the lines about what reading was to them and why they got into reading. It made me feel so connected to the story line and reminded me why I read books. I loved the enemies to friends to lovers plot line. The story of them falling in love and how it happens differently for everyone. The story has its cutesy romance moments which I thought I’d hate but came to love. Plus, it has some real emotional conversations that had a knot in my throat. I enjoyed the depth that the characters brought to the story. The pacing was just perfect for me. A slow burn for the love to come in but I enjoyed their banter throughout. Plus all of their cute DMs back and forth were my favorite. One of my favorite things about the book is how it recognized the different types of readers there are and that it’s okay. I will be thinking about this book all throughout the day and recommending it to everyone. Read if you love: 💕 enemies to lovers 💕forced proximity 💕 slow burn 💕books about books 💕dual POV

Love story with great character growth
Format: Kindle
You Got Mail vibes ☑️ Witty banter ☑️ Emotional vulnerability ☑️ I came for the romance about two bookstore managers vying to save their position and stayed for the character development, which is so well done. Josie and Ryan avoid romantic relationships at all costs due to past trauma. Josie is stoic and loves literary works while Ryan is an easy-going romance book lover. Can opposites work together for the greater good? Can they find love with each other? First as BookshopGirl, and RJ.Reads, and then as themselves, they learn to open up, heal old wounds, and connect on a deeper level. I couldn't help but cheer them on, and when they finally allowed each other in, my heart swooned. And that epilogue ... ALL. THE. FEELS. • Rivals to lovers • Dual POV • He falls first • Slow burn • Forced proximity • Opposites attract

This was a fun and fast read. Major You’ve Hot Mail vibes. This book was a giant validation of books and reading in general and of the romance genre specifically…not that I needed validation!

Amazing 'quick' tan
My all time favorite tanning lotion. Won't use anything else. Yes your hands turn brown as you put it on due to the coffee extract but so do you after laying in the sun for less than an hour!!! Ready for tan lines & summer sunshine!
