Some dresses are complicated. The Black Poplin Maxi is not. Sandhya Garg cut it from 100% cotton poplin — a fabric that has a slightly crisp hand when it comes off the bolt and then softens and moves more with every wash. The poplin here is the heavier side of the spectrum: it has structure without stiffness, drape without flimsiness. One customer, Penny J., described it as "soft and on the heavier side for soft cotton, not thin at all" — which is the most accurate single sentence we could write about this fabric. It is the reason this dress photographs the way it does, moves the way it does, and holds its shape through a long evening or a flight to a vacation destination.

The silhouette is a fit-and-flare: fitted from the square neckline through the bodice, then flaring into a full maxi skirt that skims the floor. The straps are pintucked — a small construction detail that adds a subtle gathered texture at the shoulder rather than a flat strap. The back is the conversation piece: a criss-cross strap arrangement that is simple from a distance and interesting up close. It is not a cut-out or a keyhole — it is a structural detail that lets the dress work without a bra and creates a clean line from behind. The square neckline sits flat and wide, framing the collarbone and shoulders in a way that photographs especially well.

The dress runs true to size. Model is 5'8" and wears a Small; high point shoulder to hem measures 52". At 5'4", the hem grazes the floor — Karein J., who is 5'4" and wears the dress in a Large, described it as "perfect length in kitten heels." For reference, A.B. is 5' even and found it "a bit too long to wear with flats but perfect with wedge sandals." If you are between sizes, size down for a closer fit through the bodice. Consult the size chart and measure your bust before ordering.

In black, this dress works across a wider occasion range than any single-colour alternative. Beach weddings and outdoor summer ceremonies — the cotton breathes in warm weather and the full skirt moves in a coastal breeze. Day-to-evening transitions — wear flat sandals to a daytime event and swap to heels for dinner. Date nights where you want a dress that requires no ironing and makes no effort look obvious. Karein J. called it "a blank canvas for accessories" — she is right. The dress holds whatever jewellery, shoe, and bag combination you put with it, which means it travels well and earns its wardrobe space many times over.

This dress is also available in yellow and pink — Penny J. bought the pink first and came back for the black. If your size is sold out in black, check the other colourways: the construction and sizing are identical.

Available in sizes XS through 3XL — US sizes 00 through 24. Gentle hand wash in cold water or dry clean. A.B. confirmed no fading or shrinkage after washing and hang drying.

Product details: 100% cotton poplin | square neckline | pintuck straps | criss-cross back | fit-and-flare silhouette | full maxi length (52" from high point shoulder) | sleeveless | black | casual to semi-formal occasion range | sizes XS–3XL | $298 | free US shipping on orders over $250.

Is this dress true to size?

Yes — it runs true to size with a fitted bodice. Check the size chart and measure your bust before ordering. If between sizes, size down for a closer fit through the bodice and waist. Model is 5'8" wearing a Small; the hem is full floor-length at that height.

Is the fabric thick enough to wear without a slip?

Yes. The 100% cotton poplin has enough weight and opacity that no slip or lining is required. Penny J. described it as "on the heavier side for soft cotton, not thin at all."

Can it be machine-washed?

Gentle hand wash in cold water with mild detergent, or dry clean. A.B. washed hers and hung it to dry with no fading or shrinkage. Do not tumble dry or machine wash on a regular cycle — the pintuck and criss-cross strap details need gentle handling to hold their shape.

Is this dress available in other colours?

Yes — also available in yellow and pink. Penny J. bought the pink first, then returned for the black. Sizing is identical across colours.

Is this appropriate for a beach wedding?

Yes. The cotton poplin breathes well in warm and coastal weather and the full maxi skirt moves beautifully in a breeze. Pair with a block heel or wedge sandal for outdoor terrain. This is one of the dresses specifically designed for beach wedding guest dressing.

What shoes work best with a fit-and-flare maxi dress?

Wedge sandals work especially well with the full maxi length — A.B. found wedges perfect where flats were too casual. Kitten heels give a refined look and work with the floor-grazing hem. For beach or outdoor events, a block heel or flat embellished sandal. Avoid stilettos on grass or sand. The square neckline works with both delicate and statement earrings — keep the neckline clear of necklaces since the neckline itself is the jewellery.

Will this dress wrinkle in a suitcase?

Cotton poplin is prone to light creasing if tightly packed. Roll rather than fold, or pack it last on top of your bag. A quick steam on arrival removes any travel creases. The criss-cross back and pintuck straps are easier to press than most structured details — use a medium iron setting with a pressing cloth on the reverse.

Sequel to Hands of Light
Format: Paperback
Hands of Light has been widely recognized as the foundational text merging the Eastern approach to healing through cleansing and balancing a person's chakras and auras with the Western approach to healing through re-tuning a person's electromagnetic frequencies by applying the principles of quantum physics. Barbara's sequel, Light Emerging, further amplifies and extends these concepts. Specifically, she elaborates on the applications of the Holographic Model, the Creative Process and the mechanisms of Spiritual Guidance. She defines and diagrams the four dimensions of humanity at the Physical, Auric, Harac and Core Star levels. Through these four dimensions, average humans, once healed and balanced, can mature to be channels of energy, connecting heaven to earth vertically, and connecting all of humanity horizontally. The whole of Barbara's teaching can be incorporated into these four simple, clear and deeply profound diagrams. Since her previous book, Barbara set aside her private practice to establish a four-year university-level program to train and accredit healing practitioners to apply these disciplines. This book incorporates the further insights and experiences she gained through developing her School. Light Emerging is written specifically to instruct readers on how to self-heal and to give readers a preview on the commitment required to becoming a healing practitioner. This book is not intended to replace her School's four-year degree in healing. Appendix C offers links to current lists of her practicing graduates, by city and state. There is no duplication between her books. I personally benefited by reading and studying them side by side. I have also called a number of her graduates here in California and confirm they have both the meticulous training and proper motives to follow in Barbara Ann Brennon's footsteps. No fiction here. This book exemplifies the theory and practice of genuine physical, psychological and spiritual healing, either through self-study or through a practitioner.

A very erudite validation of alternative energy healing
Format: Paperback
I have not got very far in reading since I am reading in parallel Rosalyn Bruyere's "Wheels of Light", but so far find it more accessible than Ms Brennan's first book, "Hands of Light" and this is quite natural since I am not a scientist. But I can't help feeling that in many instances of alternative healing modalities, a personal experience of a natural gift of healing is being made to appear to the general public as a complex and costly necessity for effecting the healing that is a natural propensity of one's body if not hindered by pre-conditioning. Notwithstanding this, I like this book because is speaks to a personal experience of healing energy as subtle sensation/LIGHT which I see as merely awaiting universal acknowledgment that ALL is Light, appearances to the contrary to be shattered by such acknowledgment, and all advances in science that corroborate that fact is welcome.

A great resource for those on their own healing journey and others
Format: Kindle
It is said that energy medicine is the next frontier of medicine. This book helps to explain why. Barbara has decades of experience working with physics, counseling, high sense perception, as well as watching and assisting thousands of people manage their energy field for wellness. Her first book "Hands of Light" is more like a technical manual (and fascinating). This book is written for all of us - on our own healing journey and how we can **empower our selves in our own health and well being**. How we view and assimilate western concepts of "medicine", medication, therapy and other interactions into our own self has more to do with health than the intervention alone. It is also a great resource for healers, psychologists, medical professionals - anyone in a service profession aimed to assist others in their health and wellness. The concepts are powerful when practiced with intention and depth of management of our own field. We can help others by simply managing our own awareness, mindfulness and field.
