Punica granatum var. Nana easily form contorted, weathered, and ancient looking trunks relatively quickly and have beautiful small leaves making them excellent species for bonsai. Hardy To zone 7.
Punica granatum var. nana seeds require a period of cold stratification before they will germinate. Place the seeds in a ziplock bag containing a small amount of moist, but not soaking wet sand or vermiculite. Make sure the seeds are distributed through the moist sand/vermiculite and place the seeds in the refrigerator for 4 to 6 weeks. After this cold stratification, plant the seeds ¼ inch deep in a well draining potting soil. Keep the seeds moist, but not soaking wet, between 70°F to 75°F for best results. Seeds typically take 1 to 3 months to germinate, even with optimal conditions, seeds may have slow and sporadic germination.
